How To Change Air Conditioner Filter In House

This is the most basic maintenance that you can perform yourself on your system, is cleaning or replacing your air filter. First, you need to locate air filter in your home. Where is your air filter located? Every central air conditioning and heating systems should have an air filter. Traditionally, they have always been located in the return ot the a/h [air handler], in the return duct, but over time, there has been a filter access where the return starts in the home that are being used. So once you filter is located, pull it out. Replace with the same size filter that is required for the area.

How Often Do You Change Air Filter

There are a few factors to developing a routine on how often to change your air filter in you house and it can depend on the following:

The type of air filter that you are using how many pets are in the home How many people occupying the home The level of air pollution and construction around the home outside For your basic 1"-3" air filters, manufacturers usually say to change them every 30-60 days. BUT! and this is a big BUT!!, i have learnd from being in the business so long that there are better factors than what you read on the mfg. directions.

These 4 reasons alone will give you a reason to change your air filter

1. Movement in your home is first and foremost. This includes pets. A lot of movement, coming indoors then outdoors, not only brings in the dust, but also stirs it up inside your home. Thus entering the return area to the filter quicker

2. If you live in a construction area, or someone is remodeling a home, there is a lot more dust flying around.

3. If you have pets [they all shed], their hair will fly thru the air straight into the return.

4. If you have severe allergies and you need a clean home

Why Does It Say To Change Filter Every 90 Days

This is a standard that companies put on their filters. When you see this say "Change filter every 90 days" on the mfg label, it is generic saying for house to house. Meaning,

depending on your situation, you can change your filter UP TO 90 DAYS

A great example:

A house with 2 dogs, 4 people, lots of moving around inside home, a/c set at 78 or at a temp that it runs more. That scenerio, up to 90 filter may not go the full 90 days. It may only go up to 30 or 45 days.

A house with 1 dog 2 people, rarely home, or is home just does not roam around and a/c set at 78 or up to where it's not running as much. This scenerio, the filter may last in upwards of the 90 mark, because there is less movement, less dust and hair flying around.

GREAT way to figure this out!!

Date your filter before you put it in it's spot. That way after 30 days or so pull it out, look at it. If it needs to be replaced, replace it. If it looks like it could stay in longer, then give it some more time. You be the judge. Just remember. IF YOU CAN'T SEE LIGHT [hold up above you so you can see thru, best place is outside up toward sky] THRU IT, IT CAN'T PASS AIR THRU IT
