Having a clogged condensate drain is the most common cause of water issues as far as leaking at the indoor air handler. You should know why your air handler is leaking water. If the drain gets clogged with scum, sludge, mold, sometimes lizard or even a tiny frog, then the water will back up into your home and you will have to unclog it.

clogged a/c drain line causing water leak

There are a couple temporary quick easy methods on how to stop water leaking from your a/c, that are free to you as a homeowner. It takes some work on your part, but saves you money. It's the best way to get you going til you can get service generally during normal business hours.

THE WAYS ARE

1. Find the drain outside, usually around the outside condensing unit. It will normally be a white pvc 90 elbow. Twist and pull the 90 til it comes off, take your water hose, preferably with a gun nozzle on end. If you have a fancy sprayer, it won't be as strong of pressure. With the water turned on, hold the hose against drain with pressure, squeeze trigger of hose. Count to 10 in a steady pace [not fast, not slow]. Release, the water will come out of drain like a fountain. If it hasn't, try it again. Once the blockage has broke, water will start flowing out along with the crud in the drain.

2. This involves a wet dry vac. Good to have one handy regardless. Go outside same manner as the first way, but instead you will attach the end of the wet/dry vac hose [fit better if you remove any attachment leaving just the hose]. Turn on vacuum and go inside to see if you can hear the vacuum. If not, you have a clogged line. At this point you can force water into the drain as in first method then put the vacuum back on and go back in and listen.

The picture above is an actual drainline, it was so clogged that the top section of pvc had to be replaced. This was a costly charge to this homeowner. So, if you are wondering why your air handler is leaking water. Think! Have you done a semi annual maintenance, and do you do your own inbetween self maintenance to prevent accidents?

There are a few reasons why your air conditioner is leaking water from the bottom. As mentioned earlier, your condensate [drain] line is a major culprit. Other reasons why your air conditioner is leaking water inside, could be a clogged air filter. When was the last time you changed your filter.

This not only keeps air from circulating, but also will build up the water in your drain pan, causing it to overflow over the side. One thing you don't want is your air conditioner leaking water inside your house. Even in the garage is not good as you have to move all the wet stuff out of the waters path otherwise you have another problem.

A clogged filter will lead to a blocked evaporator coil. This is air flow restriction in your home. This will also lead to serious cooling issues and damage to your equipment.

Why Is My Air Conditioner

Leaking Water Inside

Have you checked your air filter, is is blocked or clogged? This will cause water back up or your evaporator to freeze up. This can be a real mess if your coil freezes up on you, That is a lot of ice that needs to melt. The water has to go somewhere and the drain pan is only so big. It's not designed for melting ice. It is highly recommended to keep your filter cleaned or changed regularly to prevent a/c water leaks and a/c cooling problems.
