In the industry i have been to thousand of homes, and in the bulk of them, one question tends to arrise. How to replace the air filter in my home. Of course, there are mainly two reasons why i would be asked such a question. First, they have been in their home over a year and never knew they had a filter. or second, they have a cooling problem, and it is caused from a clogged air filter.
All filters have an arrow on them. So which way does the air filter go in to return? Air flow up. Wether, the air filter is in the air handler, or in a ceiling/wall return duct, the air flow always goes towards the a/h and up out of the supply.
Always remember [AIR FLOW UP].
How Often To Change The Air Filter In The House
This is a great question. Many people don't really know how often to change the air filter in the house. Usually, they wait til they have a problem to start looking. There are many different versions of air filters out on the market, but they all have that arrow up. If not, they will say "This Side Up".
It all depends one, on the traffic in your home. How many walking people and pets are there and how often do they come and go in/out. Second, do you live near a high construction area or is there building in the community you live in?
Generally, with not much movement, a filter will last the full 90 days. Depending which category you fit in the same filter may last 30 days. This is up to you to decide. Use your judgement. If it looks unhealthy, toss it.
How To Locate The Air Filter In Your Home
Every central heating air conditioning cooling systems should have an air filter, somewhere in your home. So if you want to know how to locate the air filter in your home, it is usually locateded in the return ducting or in the air handler [a/h] unit itself. Sometimes, the filter can be harder to locate on some HVAC units than others.
In the newer homes, they tend to put the air filter location either on the ceiling behind a return grill, or in a return grill on the wall. These are called filter back return grills, used soley for air filter purpose.
